The first thing I did was disconnect the steering arm, HOPING it was the steering box so I could accelerate my power steering upgrade. No go.
I just opened it up and when I pulled the steering knuckle, the short half of the axle shaft came with it. I was expecting the universal joint to be held together. I'm studying the manual to see if I can figure out what happened. There is a lot of metal shavings in the grease, but the balls generally look okay. The center ball dropped out, manual suggests it should be somewhat difficult?
These are the Bendix-Weiss axles. I looks like everything is held in place by the knuckle, so maybe the sound what something getting stuck in the joint, not the joint itself coming apart.
I need to poke around inside there some more.
