Sure sounds like plugged / restrictive exhaust. I've had this problem on later model, cat. converter cars, though obviously doesn't apply here.

I don't know if this has been covered, but could exhaust valves be adjusted so 'tight' as to restrict the exhaust enough to give the same results?

Again...Just grasping at those straws.

Just thinking...Probably not. If 'tight' valves were the cause, removing a spark plug would probably make no difference.
