I strongly advise against wiring the unit for 120V ac. If the lamp sockets and other parts are not built for that much voltage you can create a serious safety hazard. Also, if the frame of the assembly is connected to the ground circuit for the lamps then you would create another safety hazard by having the ac system neutral connected to the frame or possibly even worse the ac hot could be connected to the frame. At a minimum the lamp sockets should be electrically isolated from any other metal parts of the assembly. Any metal parts of the frame, etc. should have a good equipment ground. Best thing is just don't go with 120V ac without knowing what you are doing. The low voltage 12V ac idea is OK.
