If the gear seized, it wasn't pumping oil. Check the plumbing in the crank case.
If the shaft seized, mmmm, it was assembled dry? But still the oil in the pimp is mostly under pressure, and lubes the shaft.
I',m thinking the pump wasn't picking up oil, and it seized before the engine did. Pull the pan and some caps.
