If the radiator is off, put a big socket on the front nut, and try to turn the engine, just a bit. Now go backwards. You should feel a small motion, then it gets hard again. Back and forth, discern the length of that small motion. About an inch at the pully edge Is OK.
You are feeling the slack in the chain.

Only other way it to split the overlap on the valves of cylinder one or six. I think you can do it by removing the valve covers, and wathichg gtht valves on either 1 or 6. You want to watch the exhaust close, and the intake start to open. On these old flatties there is no overlap, you want to get right between the one closing and the other opening. The timing pointer better be right at TDC 0. You might be off by 40-60 degrees.

Or your cheap ass compression tester is worthless? No way one of these should ever get to 125.
