You need to do a cylinder leak down test. Beg, borrow, or rent a cylinder leak down tester. At a minimum, put air pressure to each cylinder at TDC and see what you find. There's plenty on the internet about doing these test.

I think you are probably doing an engine rebuild on the installment plan.
