Problem is that I think it came off a long time ago. We don't really have "probies" per say...most havent even completed firefighter 1 (myself included) though we have a vast range of experience with wildland firefighting. Our department is 99% volunteer and the maintenance on these trucks has never really been addressed until just recently. In years past, we had trucks that had to be parked against trees because the service brakes had failed and it was never mentioned to the Chief (one of only 3 actual employees.

We are now going through our inventory of trucks and equipment and getting things up to competent. We have a new maintenance and reporting system with individuals being paid and responsible for checking the trucks and reporting any issues or safety concerns. Im told that the parking brake on this truck hasnt worked for a LONG time. Guessing the yoke was damaged by the drum being loose for a long time and wallering out the bolt holes, otherwise i don't know how it could come off without puking all of the gear oil out of the transfer case.

The average age in the department is nearing 60 and its becoming painfully obvious that we need new and younger blood to keep the department healthy and ready to respond (not saying that our antique equipment (lol) is not up to the job). Problem is getting enough younger guys/gals to take on the challenge of being a firefighter AND having your real job.
