The better the soil, the weaker the root system, very often. If you look in the woods after a storm, the trees on the poor rocky gravelly soil are usually snapped off, but the ones on the rich moist bottom soil are uprooted. Unfortunately all the watering and fertilizing in a yard doesn't give the trees any motivation to sink their roots deep. For a tree to grow that big in 40 years, it obviously had lots of water and fertilizer. That's growth rings 1/2" wide, which you never find in the wild in North Idaho (more like 1/16th to 1/8th inch)

Looks like you really got lucky with this one. Yeah, it could have been better, but it also could have been much, much worse.

It's funny how the recent batches of thunderstorms all went through Spokane and Sandpoint and totally missed us. The edge of one went over Kellogg and did $2 million worth of damage to Dave Smith Motors' trucks, but all we got from it was some big raindrops.
