I believe lots of old pumps, welders, and generators used 230 industrial engines. I think some of the military rigs had a chain-driven generator/welder in the back powered off a rear PTO. Plenty of power, but not very efficient by today's standards. I have a little water-cooled 4 cylinder 5 kW army genset made in 1958 and the ratio of electricity to hot water that it produces is amazingly low. It'll burn a gallon of gas in an hour easily, even without much load.
