I did not have much money and the truck started to be a sponge soaking up the funds I needed to use for my family and 3 young boys. I sold it. Is was sad as just a few years later I started a new job and then I regretted selling it. Finally, at the age of 47 I found another. This time I will have enough time and resource (money and tools) to get it mechanically restored and on the road. But even now it will take a couple of years. Mine runs and is all there but here is how I look at it:

(Not trying to discourage you...just being realistic)

Glass and doors and seals. $1000
New tires and rims cleaned up $1300
Brakes $1000
Cab interior gauges and seat and other $1300
Missing pieces $1000
Hours to straighten and clean up body (no paint) - unknown but a lot
Engine 12V conversion and wiring, distributor, points, coil, plug wires $500
This is assuming you have a running engine
Seals, leak fixes, misc. $1000
Axle seals and bearings $500
Lights $500 I know but I am not kidding.
Manuals $250
Fluids and other similar things $100
Radiator re-cored $1000
Misc $1000
Title and License - $? for me $425

I did not add all of this up but I paid $5K for my truck, $5K for shipping (from Canada) - hopefully you can skip this shipping piece altogether, and then all of the charges above go on top of the base cost of the truck so in my case I will have $20K into it without even having body work and paint nor work on the engine, transmission, winch, differentials being overhauled or rebuilt. Thankfully my runs and seems solid in all regards - except some leaks at axles.

Be realistic. Get one in good shape to have fun right away or risk losing too much money or losing interest before you can get it on the road. You will not find people selling these at a low price unless they are ignorant of what they have. Even the bad ones are pulling in $5K for the sale. Unlikely that you will find someone who feels they want to help you and your son out with a project by giving you one at a low price - but you never know. I fella on here was so nice he offered to give me a tailgate for free! Great people on this forum...really smart and experienced...and nice too. Welcome and enjoy.

Happy for you! Have fun with the search itself. It can be a good time.

Good Luck!

Cliff
