they probably just let it leak. On one site, they estimate more than 100 million gallons of hydraulic fluid is lost each year.
While I often questions such stats, it seems like producers would have a pretty good handle on this since they know how much fluid goes to fill new equipment each year and I doubt that people changing hydraulic fluid accounts for much. People probably just wait until a hose breaks.
