There's a good thread over on the Power Wagon Advertiser website about a guy in Australia who is planning to upgrade to 4.89's. If you haven't seen it, it's a good source of things to consider.
Yes, the 4.89 ring gear is a direct fit replacement. However, I was blown away by the cost of the bearings if you decide to go with everything new. And, that's on top of the already expensive ring gears and having them setup.
I think the reason people go with with different axles is (among other things) so they can have a greater choice of gearing. The 4.89 gear ratio is still too low for any serious highway driving.
