Bed liner will hold up better than the 3M film. I have the film on my car and it's fine for the occasional stone or bug, but won't hold up to the kind a abuse you're talking about.
I do think the step idea is proabaly better depending on price plus more practical. I'm not so sure the 2008 will rot from the inside out, most of these cars are well coated from the factory inside and out, unlike older vehicles.
