Years ago, when my daughter (who lived our of state with her mother) was going for a girl scout badge, she visited and I went through how an engine works and showed her the parts of a disassembled engine. We also changed a tire and went through the basic oil change and maintenance procedures.

I didn't think much about it. Seemed pretty normal stuff to me. Years later, she thanked me for the lessons saying she didn't know anyone else who could have done that for her.

When she visited, she would often go with me to the auto parts store. A couple years ago, now a wife and mother, she said that she would not have know about going to the auto parts store to get replacement parts if she hadn't gone with me. I was sort of stunned. Doesn't everybody know about getting parts at an auto parts store? Then I realized that lots of kids, especially girls, have never been in an auto parts store.
