Chris' idea is excellent. I used a large bearing separator near the outer edge of the steering wheel hub, with several layers of rags between for protection. With moderate tension and a couple sharp smacks on the puller shaft, the wheel popped right of with no damage anywhere. I think I also soaked the hub/shaft in Kroil for few days prior.
