Right on, Jerry. I have found that the Most Important Thing is to spool off the cable you have used and spool it back on as neatly as possible. If one wrap doesn't lay right, it can cause a terrible kink when the next layer of cable crosses over it, under heavy load. I've seen guys have to wrap the cable around a tree or rock and back up their truck with the winch in free spool, just to clean up their mess with the cable. Besides, it offends my sense of orderliness ha ha.....
I have found when winching in my '57 W-200, that if I line the truck up perfectly using the center line of the hood,with what I'm winching to, whether it's a snatch block or the object I'm moving, the cable will wind on the drum just like your 'fishing reel'.
