The gates are the same except for the right lower corner. On the Camper Special gate, that corner has a forged steel insert with a slot in it. On the bed side, there is a rectangular piece instead of the usual round cup that the tailgate rotates on.
When you line up the rectangular piece with the slot, you can remove the gate without tools.
If you find a Camper Special gate, you can remove the forging and tack it into regular gate to convert it to a Camper Special gate. You'll need the rectangular piece too if you don't have it.
When he said his friend's truck had a tailgate stolen, I imagined it was a Camper Special gate since they are so easy to take off. Otherwise, getting the screws out can take some time and effort.
