That would be nice. Something you unroll like a sheet of plastic is more likely. But the place to put it is first on the roofs of all buildings since that's close to the load and the wires are already there -- not out in the desert far away from the loads.

But I forgot something critical in my calculation. Solar cells have an efficiency of 15-20%, so that 20,000 sq mi becomes 100,000 sq miles so now we're up to a piece of land 300 miles on a side.
