of course your frame wont rust in California. the most car friendly environment in the country. I don't know what problems you had with the dodge but I have had quite a few 61 to 66 Dodge trucks and never broken down, towed many big loads, hauled lots of gravel etc. And, lets be honest. Toyota compact trucks, or Tacoma's whatever they call them now are really just a car with a box on the back. cant haul, cant tow. just a grocery getter for young wives. ;/) and they did wait 12 years. actually longer and they didn't go back as far as the problem started.
delusional buyers is why Toyota got so big here. I admit there was a period of time where the Japanese stuff was probably a bit better than the American from about 1975 to 1988 but beyond that its all perception. Back in the 70s someone made a documentary about buyer perception and they went to the mistubishi factory and they were building dodge Colts and Mitsubishi version of the same car on the same assembly line. The film makers followed the cars to the US and asked people looking at both cars which one they would buy and most said the Mitsubishi. same car, same plant different name tags. all a myth. same thing with Toyota corollas and 90s chevy novas. both the same car but chev could not sell any novas. People tend to buy with their wallet. when gas crisis hit it made sense to buy a 4 banger Datsun than an impala with a 400. Then so they didn't get laughed at they claimed it was a better car when really just a death trap pop can in comparison. a great book to read about the decline of American industry is "Car guys V. Bean counters"
