Recently, I was checking to see if an ammeter clamp can measure amps on a direct current system. Evidently, on some of the more expensive ammeters with hall effect sensors, you can. Otherwise, you are out of luck. The Harbor Freight model is not going to work.
The ammeter I used recently to check the starter draw on a FFPW attaches directly to the battery and passes the current to the starter. This ammeter carries all the load of the starter, so they have to be pretty healthy meters.
