I have no trouble on lighter material and actually will put down a nice weld at lower settings but I worry about penetration.

I am rewelding a traction bar to a dana70 axle tube. Side plates are 3/8" and the tubes are 1/2" wall best I can tell. My first welds were bad and cracked at the Iowa rally truck pull. Further damaged them hill climbing so time to grind and reweld. Not exactly life safety but the weld is under very high stress.
