The WDX follows the same naming convention as the rest of the models in that year. WC was a 1/2 ton truck. WD-21 was a 1 ton long wheel base 2wd. WF-32 was a 1 1/2 ton truck.

So it's WD for 1 ton of that era and the X signifies that it isn't the standard 1 ton. I'm not sure if there is any data explaining exactly what the X meant, but it's only purpose is to differentiate the WDX from the other WD models.

In any year the WDX style PW has a model number based on the model numbers of that era like a B-4-PW-126 is a 1953 PW and a B-4-B-108 is a 1953 1/2 ton 2wd truck.
