Thanks for the thoughts. I've been using winches for 50 years, dragging in firewood logs and moving or recovering vehicles. In the past, if I needed to stop the engine before the cable snapped or pulled the tail chain through the fairleads, I could run around and turn the key to kill the engine. I think a push button or toggle that momentarily separates the flow to the distributor will work perfectly fine. Once the engine has stopped, releasing the button will restore power flow, but will not restart the engine.
The biggest challenge is, as David Sherman said, thorough waterproofing, to keep the road salts out of the switch.
