Neither way is electrically more effective than the other. A disconnected battery is a disconnected battery.

It's standard procedure to disconnect the battery ground when working on an electrical system if you are just disconnecting one terminal.

When you remove the positive terminal first from a battery, you stand a good chance of creating an arc if the wrench touches a piece of metal. Not so if you are removing the ground.

When you hook a battery back up, the ground should go on last.
