trans/transfer cover questiion

I have a replacement cover I went to put on today but the cut out for the slot for the transfer case controls seems to be 4" smaller than what is needed, I don't have the original to compare it too! could the one I have be for or off a two wheel drive Dodge truck? There is a cut out for a lever but its only 4 1/2" but looks like it needs to be 8-9". Can someone measure the length of the slot so I can lengthen mine.
