I have the NP 435D4 (4.56 1st..) in my 1968 W300 with a utility body and 10' Alaskan camper on the back. The LA 318 V-8 powered W300 is thus permanently loaded down but still within its 10,000 pound GVW. I have towed a 20' trailer with an old Dodge or similar load on it, about 8000 pounds combined weight, from the East Coast twice and did fine heading west on the plains to Denver. I always start in first go get rolling, then shift through the gears to cruising speed in 4th.

Maintaining speed up any incline is always a challenge, but managable. I once dropped into 1st on the highway crawling up onto the Piedmont Plateau in western Virgina, but did eventually reach the top. And that was in high range on the transfer case, so there was plenty of unused grunt left in the old gal if needed.
