I have 4:10/4:11's. Personally, I like being able to idle off from a stop and without really revving the @#%$ out of it in order to get to second. For 15 years I had a 10' Alaskan camper on my truck which topped the GVWR without gear and folks, so I've done a lot of heavy hauling. When I had the camper, I could not take off in second(high range) without abusing the clutch, but first was perfect. Now that I no longer have the camper, I can roll in second, but I don't like slipping the clutch if at all possible. My Dodge manual lists the gear ratios for the NP445D as follows:
4th : 1.00-1
3rd : 1.31-1
2nd : 2.28-1
1st : 4.56-1
Rev : 5.65-1
These ratios are the same for the NP435D,which is listed as the extra equipment for W100/200/300 in '70/'71.The NP435, which is listed as standard equipment on W300/W500 has ratios as follows:
4th : 1.00-1
3rd : 1.66-1
2nd : 3.34-1
1st : 6.68-1
Rev : 8.25-1
I guess it's a matter of preference when it comes right down to it. I prefer closer gears; I have to shift more often. 4.56 is good for me for first. I'm not in much of a hurry
