I'm about to put a Perkins 4.236T into a WC53, very similar to a civilian Power Wagon. Most of the common 4cyl 3.9L motors will fit. a detroit 3-53 will fit but the front needs some lifting. GM 6.2-6.5s will fit. In about a year there will be several 4.0-4.5L V6s in SUVs ("baby Powerstroke" in Fords, 4 stroke Detroit V6 in Dodge Durango etc.) that will make outstanding conversion material.
Right now the most available motor is the Cummins 4BT/BTA 3.9L 4 cyl. Perkins and Isuzu and many other 4cyls are very similar. Gearing is a big issue. The more gears the better, 5 at least, 6 is better. So a 5spd or a 4spd with an overdrive is good. I'm looking for a 6spd.
4.89s are pretty much required. Also you want front disks if you're going to drive at 65-70, and power steering is nice, and radial tires.
