Jim,

Did you install the Lock-Rites? If so, did you install new bearings and/or ring and pinion gears and check everything for correct backlash and bearing preload at that time? The problem could be a bad bearing or worn teeth on the gears.

When you ask about swapping front and rear carriers, do you mean just the differential carriers or the complete 3rd members (pumpkins)? I personally would avoid swapping carriers from pumpkin to pumpkin. Missmatching gears, bearing rollers and races, bearing caps, etc can get you into a big mess. If you believe the front assembly to be good, I would take out the complete 3rd member and try it in the rear axle housing. Don't go to the work of putting the rear back into the front until you take a lengthy test run to try it first. If you are satisfied with the results and the rear 3rd member doesn't show obvious signs of problems, then I would be comfortable installing it into the front axle housing as long as you make good use of the lockout hubs and know the front will receive few road miles.

Why do you want to remove the front Lock-Rite? Have they created unfavorable driving characteristics?

Good luck
Clint
