Swapping diffs?

My stock M37 (w/dual lock-Rites) has developed a pretty good gear whine in the rear over the past few years. Whines mostly cruising under load and is quiet when coasting. Lube level is OK. Question is can I swap the front and rear carriers? The front has very low miles due to lockout hubs while the rear would likely last a long time in the front. I am planning to take the front unit out anyway to remove the front lockrites and this would be a good time to do the swap if OK.What am I missing? Thanks.
