Greg,

I would be very interested in such a unit, provided the cost is not prohibitively high. If I could get a hold of this kind of unit, I might then swap back in the original 5.83's front and rear. This overdrive/5.83 combination would give me decent highway speed and the benefit of really low axle gearing off road or when pulling a heavy load.

When you say it's a 27% overdrive, do you mean it's a 0.73:1 ratio, or do you mean it's 1/1.27 = 0.787:1 ratio? Either way sounds pretty good to me.

One thing for folks to consider is whether or not there would be enough top-end power left in a flathead engine to pull the truck down the road with overdrive and 4.89's, as you lose some mechanical advantage with that kind of gearing combination.

With stock tires, 5.83 gears, and the truck traveling at 65 mph, the drive shaft would be turning about 3750 rpm. With 4.89's instead, the drive shaft would be turning about 3150 rpm. Is this a problem for either ratio gearset (especially the 5.83's) overheating or experiencing other wear problems?

Send me a survey! You can send it by e-mail, if you like.

Anxiously awaiting further developments!

Thanks,

Matt
