I believe the negative post is the one on the left as viewed from the driver's seat (if you could see through the gauge) with the gauge mounted in the dash. The red battery wire goes to this post. The other wires go to the other post.
As Sherman says, you will get a reading either way and cause no harm.
An easy way to check the generator is with a volt meter on the battery.
