The axle that usually breaks is the short rear axle. I have broke only one so far. Nice thing about a centered axle is that you only need one spare as both sides have the same axle.

Yes the metallurgy has gotten a lot better and axles are much stronger these days. If you don't beat your truck or do extreme stuff the PW axles will survive.

Someone blew out the CV joint in my 51 PW before I bought it. The inside of the bell on the end of the axle and the inside of the knuckle halves were badly gouged when the joint let loose. It must have something when that let loose. It was the joint on the short axle that blew.
