Rather than take 24 west out of Colorado Springs, head a bit further south and take 115 to Penrose then 50 west up along the Arkansas River valley thru Canon City to Salida. Canon City is about 20 miles from the big box stores in Pueblo. Salida is a nice self-contained city with good restaurants and a few newer craft breweries, so check it out on the way to Buena Vista, which is also a good choice but is probably quieter during the winter than Salida.
