I know what you mean. And the older I get, the more I think.
I notched the top of the "channel" that I had formed to fit the rect. tube. Then I welded it together. Doing this, I lost about4" of bed surface on each side, but you might lose a lot less, if you make the sides out of steel.
I didn't want them on the outside of the bed rails.
