I always use the numbers on the data tag. I'm always swapping out frames so the numbers never match anyway. I guess it matters what state you're in and how strick they are but my experience with vehicle inspections by the law enforcement guys to verify the vin, is no one ever knows where the numbers are on the frame anyway, or there are plow push plates welded over the #'s. The tag #'s are the only thing left to look at. Forget the motor #'s too, not too many older vehicles have the original motors either. Just my 02.
