Unless the work has been done in the last decade or two, doing the brakes usually devolves into a complete front and rear axle overhaul.

All the hoses, seals, wheel cylinders and maybe bushings and bearings may need to be replaced. It's definitely not a job to start unless you have the time and are ready to deal with all the work and potential problems you might find.

This is a job where you should fix everything that needs fixing. It's probably not going to be just a replace the shoes and rebuild the wheel cylinder job. Don't forget the unexpected things you might have to address like master cylinder, hard brake lines, tie rod ends, brake drums, differential seals, U-joints and steering box seal.

Fun, huh? Oh, and I didn't mention cost. Depending on what you find, you should probably have an extra $500 or more lying around for parts.
