A friend of mine had to have a water pump installed in her Jeep Grand Cherokee. A few years later, when the packing started to leak, I volunteered to change the water pump. I didn't have any problem finding what would have been a difficult bolt to find. The previous mechanic evidently used a pry bar when he couldn't find the bolt. He broke the threaded ear right off the block. For some reason the bolt didn't actually appear to be necessary and the pump never leaked or caused a problem.
