Used engines should be adjusted while running. Having a cut away rocker cover helps with the oil splashing all over when it squirts out of the push rod.

Anyway, loosen one at a time until it won't stop clattering as it pumps up. Then re-tighten slowly until it stops the racket. Then one more turn, 1/4 turn at a time- or you'll bend valves. You have to wait for the lifter to leak down between turns.

But have you checked the coil yet?
