Do a compression test and check valve lash on any bad cylinders before tearing it down? Even if it is a bad valve, it would be nice to know which one to go after and confirm it is a bad valve. It would be a bad day to put on a new head and still have the same problem.
Do a leak down test and listen for air leaking out of the carb or exhaust?
Harbor Freight has leak down gauges for less the $40.00 or just put air pressure to the cylinders while the piston is at TDC.
Maybe, advance or retard the timing a little just to verify the timing. Can't hurt before you start tearing down the engine. Check the dwell with a dwell meter.
