I like to use a soft iron wire that bends easily. I also like to use a wire that is only about half the diameter of the hole. I then double it up so there are two strands passing through the hole. This way, if and when the bolt loosens and one of the strands wears and breaks through, I can see the problem developing. With only one strand through the hole, you don't know when the wire is worn half through and might not know there is a problem until after that single strand has broken, the bolt (and maybe even the transfer case) is laying on the ground behind you.
