He says he needs a "set" of "data plates" for his Dodge stamped. What exactly does that mean? Is he trying to replace the originals? Does it mean he wants to have some reproduction plates stamped because he likes the look? Is he even concerned about the VIN? Who knows, I don't. He doesn't say and hasn't contributed again.

I'm just trying to help. Every plate which I would call a data plate that I have seen is machine stamped. I sure haven't seen every data plate and don't even really care about military vehicles or vehicles earlier than post-war.

If he's reproducing a data plate with a VIN, which he doesn't say he is, all I'm doing is advising caution and providing first hand information from a law enforcement officer with the specific job of VIN verification as to the problems he may encounter.

My other point is that hand stamping with individual stamps will not replicate the look of a machine stamped number. That may or may not be applicable to him. If it is, hand stamping the number is probably not the way to go.

I am not an expert on anything. I do have some experience with regards to somethings which I am not hesitant to share. If you find value in it what I say, good. Otherwise, please feel free to disregard. That may be the best course of action anyway. You know what they say about free advice.

Anyway, I might observe that being challenged on points of minutiae may be one of the reasons there appear to be more "lurkers" on this site than contributors.
