Nothing beats sand for economy and effectiveness. The first time you use a sandblaster, it's like magic. What would have been nearly impossible to do without some kind of media blasting is accomplished in seconds.
The downside with silica sand is the inhalation hazard. But, that's why most of us pay someone else to do it.
It's probably a good idea to follow up sand blasting with a light sanding using the appropriate grit.
