You say the engine is surging now. Did you replace/rebuild the original gasket stack on top of the diamond-shaped adapter? If not rebuilt (stacked up) to the original gasket height, the mounting stud will be effectively too long, and will prevent the carb from seating as the stud hits the carb body. This will create a vacuum leak that will cause surging. Just another thing to check.
