I think it is O.K. to use a snap on chuck, a length of hose and and in-line chuck and pressure gauge to remotely inflate the tire if the ring is properly chained in two or three places to the tire and wheel. Use good, reasonably sized chain.

Place the tire flat on the ground with the ring up. Stand well away from the tire with the tire outside and away from anything that could be damaged, including you. Maybe stand under something.

Sometimes, some of us are just going to do it ourselves. Maybe, because we have no other choice.

We are dealing with something that is dangerous, but it is not an atomic bomb. Every time we inflate a low tire we are taking a risk, but we don't take it to the tire shop.

The key is to act like you expect the ring to come flying off and to act accordingly. If you can't, don't understand the process, usually screw everything up, or you are not comfortable with it, take it to a tire shop, where for $10 and hour or so, the kid will take the risk.

I took a tire to a tire place. I noticed the kid was inflating the tire to 32 pounds. When I pointed out that the tire inflation pressure printed on the side of the tire was 15 pounds, he was surprised.

Same thing for an ATV tire I took in. The tire came back rock hard. I don't think they know those tires are only inflated to 3 psi.

It's always a good idea to use an in-line tire gauge/valve and snap on chuck so you can stand to the side while inflating any multi-piece wheel.
