Around here they will sometimes build a huge lodge in the middle of their pond, just like in the nature books, but other times they'll build a lodge against the bank on the side of the pond, and frequently if the ground is easy digging, they won't build a lodge at all, but will just burrow into the bank. Since the burrow entrance is under water, it's not obvious where it even is, although if you can look down on the pond you can see trails across the mud bottom. They will also stick green branches in the mud all over the bottom of the pond so they'll have something to eat in the winter when the pond is frozen over.
