Beavers?

We have a pond next to our house here in North Carolina. I know that the next county over has a good beaver population. Today while walking around our pond I noticed several small trees that have been cut down, and were pulled under water in just one small area on the dam.
Will a beaver build a den in a pond?, and on the other side of the dam is a fast flowing 2 feet wide stream. I could picture a beaver building a den on it, but a pond, does this happen?
