The iron in the transformers doesn't go bad. 100 year old transformers still have the same magnetic properties they ever did. What happens with poorly built transformers is you start to get shorted turns. Poor quality enamel on the wire, bending around too sharp corners, too much tension on the bobbin winter, etc contribute in manufacturing, and heat and vibration contribute in use. One shorted turn doesn't automatically ruin a transformer, but it drops the output voltage a little and increases the losses and heat. The heat softens the enamel and causes other turns to short and the voltage to drop more. The same thing happens in motors and generators. Eventually you can get a cascading effect of much reduced output and much increased heat until the thing actually burns up or trips the built-in thermal fuse.
