In reality, we usually just need something that will get enough charge into a battery to get the engine started. Even a 10 amp unit can do that in 15 minutes or so if the battery and engine are in good shape.

Other than that, a simple battery-tender type device seems to be the best option to top up a battery and maintain it.

Once you have a 10 amp or so battery charger, then it may be best to invest in a $30.00 battery tender for each vehicle you have that sits a lot.

I have a couple of the roll-around battery chargers. They seldom see use. Although, the automatic or timed charged feature is nice since you can walk away and forget it. But, the same thing goes with the small battery-tenders.

The big roll-around chargers are only necessary for people who need to start vehicles immediately, like used car lots. Or for, maybe, you-all who live in cold country and are trying to start a nearly frozen engine.
