Neat find. If the scale is 1:50,000 or 1:25,000, it is just the standard maps as used in WWII during operations and training. They probably were made (as stated) for the defense of the Western US, but also for training people in military map use. BTW, Fort Humphreys is now called Fort Leslie J McNair.

First thing I did when I purchased my present home was to buy the USGS Quad I live on and the 8 surrounding ones. I like the old ones as well. Paper maps are rapidly disappearing with the advent of the tablet computer and cheap or free downloads available. That's pretty incredible but what is more of an achievement is how the old USGS maps were made with rod and chain and hand drawings. Who can do that any more?
